Male to Female Ratio 4 Mice
I have 16" x 14" x 4" litter pans. Was wondering what male to female ratio I could do for mice? When I was breeding before I did 1:2. Would 1:3 work out or is that asking for trouble? I won't be separating the females from the males so the pans would have both parents and litters in them.
Re: Male to Female Ratio 4 Mice
I keep a 1.7 ratio in a twenty gallon if that helps.
You might have a little trouble with your parents eating the babys, so i think it would be better to seperate pregnant moms from the group
Re: Male to Female Ratio 4 Mice
We have been raising our own rodents for awhile now and found that it is better in mice and rats to house them in breeding groups but when females of either rats or mice show signs of getting close to giving birth it is better to put them in thier own cage till babies are weaned. You seem to end up with a higher percentage of babies making it to size this way less stess on the female. But a good food and access to water is key also. :rolleye2:
Re: Male to Female Ratio 4 Mice
I keep 1.2 in a 14" X 10" X 3½ the male rotates so the females are left by themselves to give birth and nurse the babies.
The biggest problem you can encounter is that if it is over-crowded with a large number of babies they will cannibalize their youngs.
Re: Male to Female Ratio 4 Mice
I think I will stick with the 1:2. I never separated the females from males and had fairly large litters (average of 30 babies total when weaned). I usually pulled when they were hoppers or weanlings.
