Opinions..whats the likelyhood

I have an August, 07' Pastel male who currently weighs 380g. What is the likely hood he is producing sperm plugs? I know its more than just putting him in with my breeding size female...

So what is the likely hood that anything would come from him?

Depends on a lot of things.

Likelyhood he is producing sperm, 50-50?

Likelyhood he will breed? 25% in my experience.

Likelyhood to produce anything? Low...

at that it would probably be in his best interest to wait till next season.

There's a RUMOR that you can breed a male that small... ;) If your curious whether or not he's producing sperm... you can check. I'm sure if you search you can find a thread that explains how to check for the "juice"! It's not hard at all to check for... but I have no idea how to go about explaining it... I'm kinda a monkey see monkey do person! :D If you are considering breeding a male that size, I'd read up on JASBALL's threads. He's successful in breeding small males without stressing them, and if I understand correctly they will stress at that size if not properly managed? Also I believe that Reptile Radio had a segment on breeding young males???... one I haven't gotten a chance to go back and listen to... That's about all I know about that... and it's not all that much! LOL :P

If you want to try it won't hurt anything, as long as you watch his weight and don't over do it. If he's still feeding strong you can start cycling the lights and night temps for him. After 3 weeks of slowly changing the cycles you can drop his hot side down to 82 at night and start misting. After a week of that stick him in with your female and see what happens. By then he could be up to 420g+. Just keep an eye on him and if he goes off feed watch his weight. Pair him up for 2-3 days at a time every 3 weeks and if he is locking you have a good shot. That's what I picked up from Reptile Radio and have been doing with my smaller males.

thank you Jake... those are great suggestions. i know my thermostat has a night drop feature. i have no idea how to use it though lol...he is a great eater too which works at our advantage.

we might be getting incubators from you too when were ready.

Why the sudden rush to breed this year? Just a few months ago you had to get rid of your snake... now a bunch of snakes arriving again with the motivation to breed the end of this season??

If you did manage to get your females ready to breed, a lot of people say that the chances of newly aquired girls breeding and PRODUCING good eggs is very low.

Also, since this is your first time breeding, and you have not had many of these animals for long, much less bred before, it may be in your animals best interest to wait until he is bigger to breed so young. I personally wouldnt feel comfortable breeding one so small, much more so when you have no idea what really to expect in the first place pertaining breeding.

Thank you for your input Connie.. were trying to gather all the information we can. we had heard of people breeding small males and just wanted more information pertaining to it. we do plan on waiting until everyone is a bit bigger.

Ok, had to come back and read again..

Expressing more information so were not misunderstood. Were not rushing to breed, were trying to get ready by gathering all the information necessary in order to do so, preplanning.. in many cases thats the best route to take, instead of just winging it not knowing what your doing. Furthermore, everyone has to start somewhere. The established breeders were too at one point first time breeders, really not knowing what they were doing. you can read all you want but you (meaning me, not necessarily you, making a generalization) really dont get it until your experiencing it for yourself. By end of the season, I mean cooling around November to have babies by the new year. I didnt mean at the end of this month by then we will have had our animals for sometime, some of them over a year. In my previous comments on this thread I did agree and comment that it would be in our animals best interest to wait until next season (meaning cooling in November 08') and as i said before.. regarding not knowing what to expect, reading and visiting/talking with the breeders local to me is as much experience as anyone can have before doing it themselves, otherwise how does anyone gain experience?

please dont take this thread as sarcasm or the like because thats not how its meant and i understand tone of voice lacks when your "talking" via internet.

I know you take great care of your animals and want whats best for them. I was surprised to read your first comment that you wanted to know if he could breed that young and produce sperm plugs. Even experienced keepers shy away from breeding males under 500.

It makes more sense now that you were planning on waiting till NEXT breeding season (I thought you meant in a few months). It was just a misunderstanding ;)
