Handeling Green Anaconda

I have a baby green. He's about 2-3ft long and have had him a week. He is eating a small rat hopper every week and without any issues either. I have his warm side at about 90 degrees and the ambient temp about 85. I reach in to hold him and he always seems ready to strike. I do have a pair of gloves I use to handle him with and wait till it is quiet and no disturbances to scare him also. I haven't been bit but yet everytime I hold him I am scared I'm going to be. Is there a way to get to hold him without gloves or should I just keep up the way I am? I know I'm bound to get bit by him one of these days but it scares the crap out of me lol

Can't you "hook" train bigger snakes? Whenever they aren't being fed you tap them on the head with a hook, so they know they arn't getting fed.

I don't own any giants but I've heard a lot about hook training.

A hook can be useful.. I use one for my burmese.

I'd suggest using the gloves until you feel comfortable. I usually handle my condas with gloves.

Might as well go ahead and get bit!! It's not that bad, had an 11 foot burmese get me a couple months ago, didn't hurt near as bad as my wife's little dog. It's just a little more intimidating. It doesn't sound to me like he is getting enough to eat. I have 300 gram ball pythons that eat hoppers. I would think at 2-3 feet he should be eating small rats atleast. If he is hungry he will be ready to eat when he sees the heat off your hand. Feed him more and lose the gloves you wimp!!!LOL

I was thinking of uping his meal size this next feed. I was given like 2 months supply of what he was being fed at the shop and it looks to small to me. I have small rats so I will just give him one and see how he does.

There's someone on another forum that breeds burms, I think goes by the name of burmama, who said about hook training. I don't see why someone wouldn't at least try to "hook train" their giants. It can't hurt to try. :cool:

I've got a few big snakes and I normally use hooks for them but if you don't have any hooks this is what I do. My big snakes are always hungry and always come up to the front of the cage when I open it. Like others said if you have a hook you can touch them on the head with it to get them to back off....or just use your hand. If it wants to bite you it would have bit at the gloves. Feed bigger meals and that should help calm him down a little bit too but all in all get him used to your human touch. Thats the best way for him to calm down and get used to you.
