Guarantees on health?

As I'm doing some research into getting a couple of the more expensive Balls I'm starting to wonder if there is anyone out there who will guarantee their animals to be free of genetic defects for the life of the animal? You know, sort of like some dog breeders will do.

I just wonder because I'm seeing a lot of snakes for over $1k and what seem to me pretty paltry health guarantees of 7 days, 48 hours from time of arrival, 24 hours from time of arrival, and I *think* I saw one a few weeks ago stating the animal was guaranteed until shipped. I'm not trying to single anyone out just want to get an idea of what to expect.

i cant say anyone will ever give a guarantee for the life of an animal. once an animal is in your care past a certain time it is your husbandry practices and so so that actually affect the life of the animal and not the breeder it came from. the longest one i know of is from RCReptiles.com who gives a 30 day.

I understand that. I was thinking more in terms of genetic health than something that can be affected by care, or lack of care, on the part of the owner.

every breeder will have a guarantee on genetics for life of the animal. the genetics are true and there is no way to change it so what do you mean by genetic health? the only thing that has to do with health is the animal itself and not its genetics.

The difference between dogs and reptiles lies in the fact that people have breed dogs for thousands of years, we have 10's of thousands of vets trained in dog care and genetics. Most vets are damn near completely ignorant when it comes to reptiles. Many if not most of the possible ailments of reptiles cannot be diagnosed from your everyday vet.

I've got an AKC bloodhound that I had wanted to breed but when I was getting ready to consider breeding her I took her to vet for a complete check up. It was found that she had a heart murmur and that it would potentially genetically passed down, so we got her fixed rather than breeding her.

I cannot take my breeder reptiles to the vet to check for much of anything thus cannot be 100% confident that there are no possible genetic aliments that could potentially affect its offspring so I could not guarantee that without lying threw my teeth and just hoping and praying I never get called out on it. Thats not how any responsible breeder would conduct business.

A short story proving that this kind of guarantee would not work because of vets is summed up by the guy that called me last month. He had bought a spider from someone, its head wobbled , he took it to the vet who proclaimed it was IBD and even though his spider was eating, growing, thriving.... The vet put the spider down telling the guy that it was necessary for the survival of the rest of his collection.

I think that would be hard to compare to snakes. I can't say that there are any genetic defects well known in this trade. There are physical defects, like a kink, overbite, neurological problems, but these cannot be pinned as being genetic in heredity. It's not the same with dogs unfortunately.

Usually when people say a 7 day health guarantee, it's for the seller as much as the keeper to make sure that a sick or dead animal hasn't exchanged hands or can be identified in time for both parties to make amends. Anytime after a set TOS time limit is considered the buyers liability for providing the proper care for the animal. (There are reasons to cover your butt legally)

The only genetics I think that are discussed in a TOS is the guarantee that the animal is heterozygous for a recessive trait, or even representing that the animal is what the seller claims it to be.
