Walking With Snake Lands Man in Jail
MASTIC, N.Y. (AP) -- Police said a Long Island man has been arrested for walking on a highway with a 14-foot-long python wrapped around his body.

Suffolk County police say Curtis Dewberry, 35, of Wading River, was spotted by an officer for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals while out strolling Tuesday afternoon. The officer called police because the python is considered a danger to the public.

Dewberry has been charged with animal cruelty and failure to protect the public against dangerous wildlife.

He was being held pending a Wednesday arraignment and didn't have a lawyer. There was no telephone listing for him

This snake was called a threat to the community as dangerous wildlife?

I don't know about you, but I'm much more scared of gun hoarding maniacs who are legally allowed to stockpile AK-47s and machine guns. Or dogs that are trained to kill and then left to run about the neighborhood unleashed by equally irresponsible owners.

I agree that this guy was a Grade-A idiot, but sheesh, of all thing things that I can think of that are real (everyday, realistic) "threats to the community" I don't think a snake should be near the top of the list. The guy was walking down the road with it, not enticing preschoolers into the back of his van for feeding day. He should be charged with a public display of stupidity.

I hope the snake is okay.

It's awfully cold to be out with a snake in NY in January. :( I hope the snake is ok too.

The public endangerment charge is a joke IMO especially given how cold out it may have been for the snake. I wish there was more info in the article. I googled it but got the exact same press release on about 20 different sites.

this is why we always say: check local laws!

many towns and cities have laws against activities like this.

I think it's dumb too but it is what it is and breaking it is bad for everybody.
