    picking out a scale...
Hey everybody, i've been around for about a month now. definitely loving my first BP, fluffy. he/she is awesome (haven't had fluffy sexed yet). Anyways, i'm really getting into this and i decided i wanted to keep better track on how it's growing and all. I'm planning on buying a digital scale to weigh fluffy and my future (hopefully!) snakes. I just need help picking one out....how heavy do these ball pythons normally get? i want to get a scale that will be able to handle my present BP and any future snakes i decide to get. what do u think?

    Congrats on Fluffy!

You can go to walmart and find a digital kitchen scale. Try and get a scale that has a capacity of 2,000gs. As that is a weight that most balls will reach in a few years time, and that is plenty big to breed. Rich at Reptile basics has a very good scale, for about 40 bucks, the best...IMO. www.reptilebasics.com.

Good on you for wanting to have the equipment for keeping track of your snake and its food items.

I posted a similar question not too long ago. You can read the thread here: What scale to buy?

I got the impression that the 7001DX was the scale of choice, both for professionals and hobby folk, so that's what I got. I use it at least once a week while weighing Salzedo and his food items. It is quite accurate, comes with several extra goodies (dish that fits snug on the scale, etc.) and was in my budget. It also goes up to 7000 grams (15lbs), so even if you get more BPs in the future, including larger females, you should be good to go.

I just received the scale from Reptile Basics, and used it for the first time last night. So far I'm very happy! (Also found out my 07 BP weighs 185g.) :)

This is what I've got and where I bought it from. The site has a nice write up on the various features of the 7001DX

I ordered the 7000g one from RBI. Its much better than the one I was using a kitchen scale from walmart. With shipping from RBI for me was 49.01. The kitchen scale I had only went up to 2500g. With the 7000g scale from RBI if I have to weigh one of the bigger snakes. I can use a 12 qt tub and it works great. With the kitchen scale had this circle on the top of the scale where you place the little dish that came with the scale. It made it kind of hard to use anything other than the dish that came with the scale. Id go with the one from RBI you wont have to upgrade untill you get a ball over 7000g. Also seams to be built alot better. One other thing the one from walmart. Shuts off after like 20 seconds of not being used. Then with snake in hand I have to turn on scale switch to g's and most of the time 0 out the scale again. I think the one from RBI also has an auto off but a bit longer.

We have the 7001DX and have found it to be a great scale. Works beautifully (I love the hold feature), doesn't race through batteries and is just an all around good scale that fits our needs. :)
