Lid help needed

hi guys!

A friend of mine donated to me a lovely 40 gallon corner tank with stand. The problem I'm having is finding a good lid for it! It was a fish tank and is now going to house Rhyban, my florida brooks. I've got a makeshift lid on it that's secure enough, but it's very... well... ghettofab. Anyone know somewhere good that sells pentagonal terrarium hoods? Or if it's possible to jury-rig an aquarium lid into a good terrarium lid?

what i used to do is get pegboard. cut it to the perfect size. bada bing bada boom

I used that and took 4 steel plates. drilled holes and bolted to the underside. The ball can lift just the peg board

I'd use plexi glass with a wood frame to reinforce it. Whatever you do, instead of using weights I'd use rotating latches that you can turn from the outside top, and that grab under the lip inside the tank. That way the lid doesn't come off without you twisting the latches. Snakes are pretty strong and the latches will look a lot nicer.

Or you can go one step further and find someplace that sells plexiglass and build yourself a top.

I just made a lid for a 40G tall tank that I'd divided in two for my pair of Centralian carpets. I figured out what size I needed, had the shop cut them for me and then bought hinges and latches. You can pick up some plastic glue at the same store and use it to put everything together. I'll take some pictures of ours tonight and post them.

Once it was done, it's pretty slick and I'm quite happy with it. I think I'll look into doing the same thing with my 75G tank.

Here's some pictures of the lid we made. This was very easy and took an evening to put together. We then let it sit, heated, until all of the plastic glue smell was gone (about 3 days). We measured what we needed and then went to our local plexiglass store and asked them to cut the pieces for us. The only problem I found was that the two lights are different diameters. Because of this, one of them sits inside the ring instead of on the top of of it.

I love it! Thanks Pat! We have our daughter's milk in one of those odd shaped tanks and we've searched forever for a proper lid. We've got something rigged up now and it works but it's ugly as sin to look at!
