Well, you want the thermostat probe to be on the hot spot. And the actual unit over on the cool side, measuring the ambient temp and humidity.

The T-stat probe should also be on the hot spot, where the animal lays, so you have the most accurate reading and it can better control the heat.

so i put the probe in the tank itself and the unit in the tank too?

Yup, there are pictures around here that show the actual placement. Everything should be in the tank to measure.

NO NO NO. Do not put the unit or the probe inside the tank this can prove deadly to your snake. The uth goes under the tank thats why its called an under tank heater. Then you tape the probe in the middle of your uth. Then you mess with the temps for awhile until your digital thermometer says 92 degrees on the hot side. A number of bad things can happen if you put either inside the tank. One being your snake could pee or spill water on the probe or the unit and could either raise the temps up to a deadly temp or electricute(sorry i can't spell) your snake. Or your snake is slithering around its tank and decides to do some re aranging with the probe and puts it on the cool side and the probe starts to read the wrong temp therfore raising up the uth way to hot. This can kill your snake within a few hours. But i understand where you are when i opened up the box of mine i was completly baffled by it. I had no idea what i was doing.

Dude.. the subject is thermoMETER not thermoSTAT. It's very safe and recommended to put the thermometer probe AND unit inside the enclosure, so you can measure ambient temps, as well as the floor temps on the warm side, and the humidity.

Thermostats control the heat pad's temperature in case of electrical spikes or failure. The probe for the tstat shouldn't be in the enclosure anyway, but won't electrocute the snake if water is spilled on it.

Yup, we were discussing the thermometer placement. the probe should be on the hot spot, and the actual unit should be on the cool end.
