spurs.. peek a boo.. now you see me
I did some searching but didn't find an answer to my question so I'm throwing it out here.. spurs. So, my question is, are they out all the time or only during "mating" season?

I know that both sexes have 'em and use 'em for mating purposes. I also know that they are not an indicator of gender, and that size varies from bp to bp.

I've only had Goliath for a short time (three weeks at most) and when he first arrived and I checked him over I did not see (or perhaps in my excitement or quick search to not overly stress him out) and/or not notice them until this afternoon. I was totally amazed to notice them and at first was like what the heck are these thi... oh. spurs?! kewl.

    thanx.

they're always there. the younger they are, the smaller they are and the harder to see, but they're there

I can always see at least a part of them all the time sometimes more, they seem to be tucked away all neat and tide as to not get snagged on something while their moving about.

thanx everyone. I guess I really didn't notice them when I first got Goliath. Do they ever "tuck" them in at all? would stress of shipping perhaps have caused him to pull the spurs in if thats what he did?

The spurs are very prominant on the males that I've been breeding recently... Lots of tickling action going on!

There are also animals that have had them broken off, so they don't really have them visible anymore, but they were there.

    It happens.

um ouch. thats gotta hurt?! but I can see how that could explain not seeing the spurs, but he definitely has both of his.. was just curious if they are capable of pulling them into their bodies or tuck them real close to make them "invisible". do they display their spurs for mating purposes only? guess its something to research. :D
