How do you care for your hatchlings?
Ive been searching and was just interested, what do you do with your hatchlings once they pip? Ive heard people talk about umbilical cords and yolk and such. What do you do with the umbilical cord?

Wow...I am surprised no one popped in here.

    Basically once they pip....

    you...

    wait for it...

    do ...

nothing (ok sorry about that trying for a little Thanksgiving Day humor :D).

That is right just leave them alone. While their heads will be out what they are doing is absorbing the yolk sack. Once this is done they will come out on there own (with only a small scar where the umbilical cord was attached)

Once they emerge put them on moist papertowels (damp but not soaking wet)...most people will put the entire clutch together in one tub. Once they have their first shed (usually a week to 10 days later) you can sex them and seperate them out into their own tubs - and after this attempt to start feeding them.

    Hope this helps.

so how long does it take for them to absorb the yolk sac. i know with my beardie that i hatched it took almost 24 hours. is that about right, or do you have to sit and watch them. and once they do pip do you just leave them in the incubator?

I leave mine in the incubator till they come out...usually takes a day or 2 once they pip.

so you have to have them in a container that is high enough that when they do hatch, they cannot get out?

All my incubation tubs have lids...so they cannot escape. (even if they did manage to get out of the tub they couldn't get out of the incubator)

Thanks...I am putting the finishing touches on the rack PDF and then will start work on the Incubator (though it is fairly easy to build so shouldn't take long)
