Hide Temps?

    Hide Temps?
The Ball Python Care Sheet advises the following temperatures:

    ~80F (ambient temps)
    ~90F (basking temps)
    75 or below is unhealthy

90-95 hot side is good, so I’ve read. However, what about the inside of the hides? What is an acceptable ‘hot’ and ‘cool’ temp for those? I don’t want to turn my hot-hide into a little oven! When I had the hot-side ground temp at 90, the inside of the hot-hide was at 100. Is that normal?

Well i would say about 93 or so. But normally if you put a hide right over the basking area the temp will go up a degree or two naturally.:gj:

Naturally! ;) However, I just wanted to make sure that 100F isn't too hot inside that little plastic hide he seems to love so much (and I would expect him to).

100 is too high. Try to shoot for no higher than 95. I have my thermo probes inside the hides to measure the temps and just make sure ambient never drops below 80.

Okay, thanks for the advice everyone.

For the record, I didn't leave him in a 100F hide! The temps I was quoting were taken while he was not in the tank and I was testing the optimal temp settings. I made sure the inside hide temp was no more than 95 before I put him back in the tank. I just wanted to know how much 'wiggle room' was acceptable from the recommended settings. Now I know!

    Thanks again. :)
