    The Best (pest free) Substrate
For those of you who have read my thread titled "Something is living in the substrate..." I have fixed the problem. Now I need another kind, and from what I've experienced I will only buy heat-treated substrates (I understand my case was rare but I'm not taking any chances so I'm not buying Exo-Terra Jungle Earth anymore). What kind of heat-treated substrate (preferably one that's good for a Hognose snake) would you recommend?

Does anyone think that coconut bark would make good bedding?

I like cypress mulch myself. I use it with my ball python. It is really good for holding humidity. Im not very familiar with the requirements for a hognose snake but you might want to look into cypress mulch. I have never used coconut bark but I have heard that it is a good substrate that is also very good at holding humidity. Hope this helps.

That taught me more so yes, it did help. I guess how the substrate holds humidity is an important factor too.

I went to the NOAH conference yesterday (and I got to hold a Rosy Boa!) and one guy there said I should use newspaper (NP) as the bottom and some crumpled up pieces of NP above that for the Hognose to burrow in.
