Yellow ackies-A few new additions (DUW)

I got some great looking little Yellow Ackies (varanus acanthurus brachyurus) in today from Rare Earth, Inc. These are the animals that are the #1 recommendation for beginners, and it is quickly noticable why they get that title once you get some. Great little monitors.

they look great. But Rare Earth is still selling animals? I thought the collection was sold but mostly kept together but there was not much in the way of breeding going on anymore?

Rare Earth is still selling animals. The company exchanged hands when Joe Lewis sold the original company. During the transition, some of the animals were sold off to private keepers, but some remained with the company. The new owner of the company, Brandon Shiflet, has a good bit of animals from the original stock(kimberlies, tristis tristis, tristis orientalis, red and yellow ackies, and pilbaras) and is working on breeding them. Most of the monitors he produces go to people who have been put on a wait list to be notified when they are available, so you never see any public offerings. I had been waiting for the ackies for about 4 months until some became available, and these only became available because someone decided they no longer wanted them.

Ok, I knew that Joe sold the business with much of the animals, but I thought I had heard that Brandon wasn't doing much in the way of breeding. But maybe that's just due to the fact that it seems kinda low key.

Yellow ackies(aka. Ridgetailed monitors, spiny tailed monitors) are dwarf monitors and grow to about the size of an large adult bearded dragon. They originate from Australia, so all available animals are CBB. Their care is pretty simple for the most part. They do not require any special lighting like most other diurnal lizards. They like to dig so a deep soil substrate is good to have. They are claimed to be the 'friendliest' of captive monitors, are a great 'introduction' species for someone getting started with monitors, and display some great behaviors.

Yellow ackie temperment is suppose to be even more relaxed than red ackies, but both have great temperments.

I knew I shouldn't have looked in on this thread....now I am totally hooked!! :):) They are totally adorable!!! How many did you get? Are you going to try breeding them? One last question, was wondering if you had any pics of their enclosure? Was just wondering how you were going to be housing yours (and maybe gain a couple of ideas from you if you don't mind;)).
