V. Storri Photos from Tonight (Dial Up Warning)

I had some posers tonight so I snapped a bunch of pictures. A cool front is on its way in so it has been raining and the pressure is fluctuating. I wonder if that is why the storri seem restless all of a sudden.

Here is another female. She is going through a shed so not as colorful as the other, but that will change once she sheds out :)

Here is the male that is in with the first female. I sure hope they get on the ball soon......ha ha...or maybe they already have and I missed it...she does look kinda plump to me...

I don't know anything about them, how big can they get?

Storr's monitors(varanus storri) generally grow to be about 12" long. They are one of the smallest monitors available in the US.

how aggressive are they? I know most monitors are haha.

OMG they are so adorable!!!

A couple of questions if you don't mind..
What size/type enclosure do you keep them in?
What type of lighting/heating requirements do they have?
How is their general temperament?
Do you know of any good websites to look up info on them?

I have been wanting to get a monitor or tegu (I love the black and white tegus but at the moment they get a little too big for the amount of space I have available) and those are totally adorable and would be a good size for me to keep depending upon their husbandry needs.

Not at all aggressive towards me. I have never been bitten by them since I started keeping them about a year and a half ago. They don't really care to be handled but all they really do is squirm.

They do have aggressive tendencies toward their own species though. If not raised up together, there can be issues...but nothing that keeping a good eye on them can't take care of so no worries there. They are an "I hate others of the same sex and dislike strangers in my neighborhood" type of monitor ;)

Oh they are gorgeous! I have been looking around the web for some nice looking monitors or lizards, possible a skink and this is definetely one of my favorite so far! And the size factor is an added bonus! I don't have room either for a larger monitor in my house[plus lizard/monitor larger then 2 feet my parents would kill. T_T]. I'd love to get to know more about them, thank you for the pictures! You have struck my interest!

I keep singles in 30 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck tubs w/ a custom top(about 30"lx24"wx16"h). I keep pairs in 4' x 2' x 2' enclosures.

No special lighting like UVB is required. Enclosure temps: 85 warm/75 cool, with a basking site between 130-140F. I use regular 35w flood lights for my enclosures.

They have great temperment but do not like to be handled like most monitor species. I have never been bitten by them yet.

Sadly, there are no websites out there to discuss the captive care of v. storri. I am working on that though. They have gotten relatively rare in captivity because not alot of people work to breed them anymore. I am working on that too ;)

If you are interested in neat smaller monitors, I would check out yellow ackies(Varanus acanthurus brachyurus). They are the best beginner monitor species and are a great learning platform for other monitors. Their size if very manageable at about the size of an adult bearded dragon and at around $125-$150 each they also do not cost as much as some of the less available species.
