So i was looking through youtube and i found this video...the person said that he put his two male bp's together for a "pre mating battle" so they would be more eager to breed...is this true or is this guys just stupid?

can help stimulate mating behavior in reluctant pairings id suppose, although i have never had to get in a physical altercation to attempt breeding with the opposite sex :rolleye2:

Both. It doesn't seem like the guy is interested in breeding but rather he keeps two males in the same tank and happened to find them fighting.

However, I have done this in the past in order to get one of my males more motivated to breed a particular female. There are other tricks that one can try first, but this method is on the list of "tricks". I wouldn't say it was necessary for successful breeding and I'm sure it does stress out the males to a certain extent.

I couldn't watch the video, blocked at my school, but I do believe that some competion can stimulate a breeding response. However, if one of the males dominates the other, usually the smaller is dominated, and its the smaller you want to breed, you may have shot yourself in the foot. Care must be taken.

I wish now I could remember who told me this now, but that they don't do it, because oftentimes, the one who loses may never become a good breeder....hmmmm...wondering if I read it in the VPI book, now. Or saw it on their tape. Now I'm going to go crazy remembering where I heard or was told this.

I picked up my VPI book again yesterday, I plan on reading the breeding section tonight. I'll let you know if I pass by this bit of info to help you out.

Wow; I have never seen males fight like that. I would think that it'd be uber stressful.. I don't know much about the whole practice so I can't really say much.. but yeah, like Lawrence said.. that they just came across them fighting. Housing snakes together is never a good thing (breeding pairs aside..) But like I said, I am not qualified to weigh in much on male combat for breeding purposes.. never had to resort to it.
