BP's and Salmonella

Do BP's carry salmonella in their skin or in their poop. I have heard both ways. I want to know because my wife and I are expecting a baby within the next month. I have heard some horror stories about babies and salmonella

Salmonella is primarily present where there are unsanitary conditions. Keep everything clean, including you, and you should be fine. It only makes sense to wash thoroughly after handling ANY pet when you have a new baby around!

Keep the snake and enclosure clean, wash up after you handle the snake, and don't let the baby touch the snake at least till she is a few years old :) You can also give the snake baths in a plastic bin, which will help with keeping it clean.

Salmonella from reptiles is actually pretty rare, and if you just use common sense like I described above, I don't think there will be a lot of risk to the baby.

You're still more likely to get it from poorly prepared restaurant food or your own kitchen cutting board, but it never hurts to take sensible precautions with pregnant women and young infants. Good handwashing habits, the use of gel hand sanitizer, leaving the cleaning of feces to you (you lucky dog you lol) are all good ways to avoid any possible contact.

salmonella is present in every egg laying animal. Now in snake it there is a very small amount an adults imune system will most likely not be affected.But that being said it should be a concern when have small children around. always making sure they have disinfected the areas that the snakes have touched them. :2cent:
