Careers in animal biology?

So I just started my second year of college, and I still have not picked a career path. Technically, I'm a business major, but I'm not sure that is where my heart lies. Actually, the thought of a 9-5 desk job for the next 50 years scares the hell out of me. I do know, however, that I have an interest in animals, particularly reptiles, but I don't know of many jobs concerning herps. I have been giving some thought to vet. school, but the more I think about it the more daunting it seems. The only vet. school in Texas is at A&M, and its hard enough to get into itself, and even if I did manage to overcome the near impossible task of acceptance, I'm not sure I (That is my parents) could afford the tuition.

The good news is, I'm trying really hard this semester to make the best grades I can. I guess what I'm looking for is some advice from someone who has been in my shoes. What jobs are there out there? What kind of education do I need? Where can I find a therapist? (Just kidding).

You have my heartfelt sympathy. Trying to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life is a daunting task. Believe it or not, I started out as a computer science major until I changed it to Zoology.

There are quite a few opportunities for a Biology major ranging from research to zookeeper. And don't dismiss vet school if that's something you'd like to do, as there are always grants and finanical assistance. My best advice would be to try volunteering, or if your lucky, a job within a career path you'd be interested in. Talk to people that are involved in that profession and pick their brains.

im in the same boat as you. im still debating over whether i should major in entomology or herpetology.

I'm in your shoes as well. I go to a community college that doesn't offer much. Just basics.....and funeral service classes. I wanted to be a vet but with as much school as it requires, the limited number of schools, the slim chances of getting in, ect. Its almost off my list. I was thinking of going for Vet Tech. Normally only two years of schooling and many community colleges offer it, except for where I am. :D

If you're still not sure, then try maybe getting a job somewhere you think you'd like to work; i.e. if yo uthink you want to be a vet, maybe volunteer at an office or something. Obviously not the same thing as actually being a vet; but would help you get a feel for what its like.

As for tuition - I'm in grad school right now and I can definately relate! But there is money out there for you to go to school. Don't let that be the hurdle that keeps you from pursuing your dreams. Good luck!

Vets(although the schooling is long and expensive, there's always a need for exotic vets, and grants and scholarships exist)
Zoological studies.
Researcher in wild animal studies.
Domestic animal management
Fish and Wildlife divisions
Humane Society work
Humane Pest animal removal
Fisheries work
Desk jobs exist in all these fields and unless you're determined you could end up working at some world renowned zoo doing paperwork for how many candy bars are bought out of your vending machines. It's all up to you what you end up doing. Don't hesitate to take a less appealing job to make money while you work towards that job you've decided on. Pay checks are great no matter whether they come from McDonald's or the Columbus Zoo. I've done a lot in life, but I've always worked hard for my moneys.
If you decide to go to school, jump through enough hoops and you'll get grants to pay for it. They exist for anyone, you just have to do work to fill out everything to apply for them.
