Newbie in need of advice!
hey all,
i write this in somewhat of a bind. i need to move my bp out of her current cage (a ****** mesh cage) into a 40 gallon tank that i recently acquired (her living conditions now are less than optimal, and i know some of you who give your bps the utmost care may think less of me for that reason, but i AM trying to give her a better living envir).
im slightly embarassed to bring this to the forefront but i dont know what else to do.
I'm hesitant to pick her up.
whenever i get close to her, she tightens up a bit like shes making to strike. just today, i was trying to get my hand under her belly to sort of scoop her up and she flinched, which startled me some.
i havent physically touched her in some time, but i dont know if thats the issue or something else.
i dont know what the deal is!
if anyone can relate or has adivce to help me speed up the process of getting my baby girl into her new and better habitat, please help!
thank you for your understanding and consideration,
-Big
Re: Newbie in need of advice!
Big, never be embarrassed to ask questions. No one here will think less of you or be allowed to flame a newcomer with newcomer type questions.
Before I answer it would be helpful to have some basic info on this snake. How big a snake is this? How long have you had this snake? What is your normal handling routines with this snake? How often does the snake eat and what does it eat?
They may seem like basic questions but often the best and most concise answers to a specific problem can come from these details. :)
Re: Newbie in need of advice!
I'm afraid to pick up my corn snake with my bare hands... Thats embarrassing!!
I used to take a winter glove and pick her up like that, but now I use a little pillow case.
If I'm drunk I can pick her up and not be afraid but thats cause I'm drunk I guess... I dont usually like to handle my snakes when I drunk anyway cause I move a lot faster... lol
But if it's a BP I wouldn't worry... cover your hand if you have too... pick her up and then once you have her and she is a little more comfortable... take whatever you have on your hand off and get to know her....
Kinda sounds like you need hold ur snakes some more!!
I think.... You shouldn't be nervious because animals can sense when u are nervious and they get nervious when you are... my :2cent:
Re: Newbie in need of advice!
my advice: even if you're nervous picking her up, act confidently! she'll know the difference!

scary little girl, all bite and no bark (unsless you count her pretending to be a rattle snake).
Re: Newbie in need of advice!
ooo... what is she kevin? she's pretty!
Re: Newbie in need of advice!
Sometimes I'm hesitant (I would not say afraid) to pick up my corn. She can be aggressive at times. I just take something like a pencil (she's still small, under 3') and move the first portion of her body away from my hand, and scoop her up. Once in my hand, she's a doll. No problems there. Once, I didn't hold her for two weeks and she became aggressive towards me and tried to bite. I think it was because of the lack of contact and she grew unused to me.
Just get a hold of your snake one way or another and try it a little each day. Get used to her and the way she moves. You'll get to know her and come to expect how she'll act.
Re: Newbie in need of advice!
i second the "holding her more" thing, my BP used to be such a "cuddle-whore", he would slither up when i opened his tank and just sit in my hair/clevage, but i moved him 250 miles and decided to leave him alone for a few weeks so he could adjust, and he striked at me the first time i tried to pick him up, but now he's back to his normal self.
