Breeding back to a parent
Is it common when people breed a snake back to one of its parents? I know with humans and a lot of mammals that this can cause problems in that offspring. Does the same hold true for snakes or not? I ask this because we purchased a het pied male and a normal female from the Manassas show last week and the breeder was telling us how you would get pieds out of the male. You breed him to the female in about 2 years and then raise up the offspring, then take the female offspring and breed her back to her father. Is this ok to do?

Excessive inbreeding will cause problems but careful line breeding is ok.

How would you define excessive?
Would it be ok to do the following to get a breeding pair of Albinos?
100% Het Albino x 100% het albino = 1 x Albino + 3 x 66% het albinos
...then....
Het Albino(parent) x Albino(offspring) = 2 x Albinos + 2 x 100% het albinos
...then...
Albino(parent) x Albino(offspring) = 4 x Albinos
Hope it makes sense....
Re: Breeding back to a parent
That should be fine-it takes several generations, as a rule, to show significant inbreeding depression in snakes. I would outcross at this point, and perhaps avoid selling the offspring in pairs....
