Rats and Mice and lactose intolerance

I was reading...I can't remember where...but was reading that rats and mice are lactose intolerant. That using mouse traps with cheese, even though it works, the mice and rats eating the cheese isn't good for them.

If this it true then what about Yogies brand yogurt drops or any yogurt drops...? I've also heard you can use yogurt (from a carton) as a treat.

So I guess I am getting conflicting information. I am told not to use milk when making scrambled eggs for my ratties. But yogurt is acceptable for them.

So what's up, can you guys help clarify this?

Small quantities of anything is the best solution. I give mine chocolate milk sips every now and then, licks of my Coke, a teensy bit of my Bailey's Irish creme whenever I have some. They love granola mixed with yogurt.

Just stick with very small quantities and they should be fine. Large amounts of anything can give them diarrhea, but if you're mixing a tad bit of milk with scrambled eggs, that's perfectly fine.

Yep I totally agree with Becky. Rats being omnivores can eat a wide variety of things and tolerate them pretty well. They tend to nibble anyways on new foods and not just gulp them down (much as a dog might do). Rats are pretty smart about not ingesting too much of an unknown food until they see if it will hurt them first.

Most adult animals are milk intolerant to some degree. It's a natural process to be weaned and not drink cows milks as an adult for most of our furry friends so I rarely offer anything with milk in it other than as Becky said, a bit of milk in some leftover scrambled eggs or a bit of leftover yogurt or something like that.
