    Newpaper stinks
Well, I hate the smell of my hands after handling newpapers.

How does anyone know that reptiles do like the smell as well?

    Just a thought.

Lol... how do we know that they don't LOVE the smell of newspaper?

Suppose it's a matter of preference, just like people. Newspaper smell doesn't bother me. In fact, after the last couple years using it for snake bedding, I LOVE the smell of a brand new newspaper... means there's no poo on it! :D

Newspaper is good for new snakes. It allows you to see any mites that may be present, easier than if you had a substrate like aspen or cypress. And it also will not get lodged in the snake's mouth when it eats like a "granular" substrate can.
For retaining humidity during shed times, unbleached paper towels work well also. Fold a few layers and yo're good to go!
I never minded the smell of newspaper. Other substrates have much stronger smells and dust to boot.
