    Grrrr the ignorance of people
I found this posted on my local Craigslist. All us reptile people sure must be evil  . Must step away from computer so I don't write something I will regret to this nutcase.

    http://columbus.craigslist.org/pet/397006925.html
"Owners of very large aligators , crocs , and pythons might pay a small to medium donation fee to feed your pets to their pets . Paying $50 to $75 for an adoption fee , might not be anything to them exept a quick meal . Buying 3 rabbits at $20 each would cost about the same , about $60 . See my point ?
After feeding something the size of a cat or dog , the reptile could go quite a while without eating again . It would be considered cheap food because they wouldnt have to pay to feed your pet . Free dogs and cats would be even cheaper for them . Why should they spend money to raise chickens and pigs if they might be able to get something cheaper from you .
I believe a higher adoption fee would prevent this from happening . I cant see a reptile owner paying $100 or more for your dog to use as food .
Same thing goes for the small pets too ! Someone is always out there looking for free or cheap food for their pets ! Dont make it easy for them !"

 Dogs and cats huh? Yeah, sure, let's feed those to our snakes.
*looks down at the cute little *FREE* siamese furr ball of a kitten laying in her lap... "what do ya think Siam, wanna be snake food?"

Some people REALLY need an education.
What I'd like to know is, what does this person think the ratio adopted pets is that are used to feed something else?
I know when I go to my local shelter or rescue the first thought that runs through my mind is "OHHHH, that puppy is so adorable; it would make a great meal for my snakes! Ohhh, and look at that litter of kittens over there at the end of the row, they are the perfect size for my snakes to swollow in one gulp!"

If this person were sitting in the same room as me right now, I feel I might throw my pen at his head!

In all honesty, someone needs to sit down and explain a few things to this fool. He seems to be operating under the misconseption that all reptile owners are in it for the "cool" factor... and not because we genuinely care for our critters.

    Combat ignorance with experience!

That's EXACTLY what I think whenever I see another animal. I separate all living creatures into either 1) snake food or 2) too big for my snake. Anyone have any little brothers or sisters that are annoying them?

things like this just blow me away. i dont know about you guys but i generally try to keep myself from looking like an idiot as much as possible. when ever i want to make such a statement as the person above, i do a neat little trick on the internet called researching the topic. five minutes of time on their part would have prevented themselves from looking like an idiot.

and of course someone will have seen that and believed it.

    A few thoughts.

    1. People here are probably the more educated segment of the population of herp-owners. If you're here, it's because you want to learn.

    2. The world is full of really stupid people, some herp owners too unfortunately.

    3. The world is full of unscrupulous people, many of whom keep animals they shouldn't because it increases their status.

    4. The world is distressingly full of jerks keeping animals improperly for the shock and awe factor, part of which could reasonably include feeding "pet" animals to a large reptile.

True story...I was on my lunch break from work last year, and loitering in a skeezy pet store kinda out of sight behind a set of shelves when these two young redneck jock-type guys came in and one told the other that he had just scored some free feeder kittens. My head snapped up and I swung round and stared at him. He took in my scrubs with the animal hospital logo, stammered for a minute, and then hastily said he'd just been joking. I wish that was true, but I'm not convinced.
