To all you Rack users out there

I currently own but one single BP, however I am thinking of expanding over the next few years. Here is a husbandry question for you rack/tub type users....

Most of the questions posted here refer to people's tank setups, regarding temperature gradient etc.... However when people show pics of their racks, there is usually only one hide, and no thermometers....

What is the science of setting these racks up correctly? I know there must be some way to do it correctly, maybe even the same as I use with my tank, who knows... But all the big shot breeders and such use the racks, so there must be somthing...

k i gotta run but a quick explanation in my case is that the room is heated to 82 degrees and the flexwatt under each tub is controlled by a thermostat to create a hot spot of 92-94.


there are other ways but you gotta talk to others!

well i use racks and i place all my temp probes on the middle level and place a thermometer with humidty in the room to watch everything i also place two hides in some tubs and one hide in the larger females tubs. but remember that with rack they have a darker area in the back of the rack and most of the time won't even use a hide back there. now when i got my racks i set them up all the same i place the probe and get all heat strips pluged in and wait 24 hours then i take i temp reading of each level and go about makeing sure all it right if one level is to hot i unplug it and let it cool a little then replug it in and check again un till i get all levels the same

I have thermometers in most of my tubs in racks, two hides. Racks are way easier to control, clean and are virtually escape proof, Not to mention BP's like the privacy, tanks have too :eek: much open space which can make them insecure and are harder to control temps and humidity. Once you go rack you will never go back. No i'm not some big shot breeder. :D LOL

When we set up our 8 tub rack I just basically put in the substrate (newspaper) and full water bowls but no snakes. Then I checked with the probe the top bin, the middle bin and the bottom bin to see how it heat held throughout the rack overall. Once I got a bead on that (very little if any variance) I just now keep the probe to the Acu-Rite tucked into the mid point tub.

We don't offer hides because the rack we use is solid black. Basically the rack works as a large hide for the snakes, though they can come to the front (cool end) and look out the nice clear Iris tubs this rack comes with.

Just about exactly the same way we did it. Chris works at a fabrication shop, so he used aluminum for the frame, and steel shelves powder coated white. The levels for the shelves are adjustable for 32 qt sterilite or whatever size you need. We measured humidity for a few days to get the gap just right for the shelves. Top middle and bottom.

Unfortunataly, we have the rack in his bedroom. And 82 degrees is NOT comfortable for us. So there is an air conditioner. We solved the problem of ambient by wrapping the heat tape in the back and just weaving from shelf to shelf. Then we wrapped 3 sides in insulation board. I dont know what you call it, it has a reflective side, and a black side. That keeps ambient at 83, and the hot spot at 92. Works perfectly, and the only one who doesnt eat is the WC. And were still working with her. It just takes time, patience, and hard work with WC...
