    Dented Eyes
:( I'm ashamed to report that Nag has dented eyes. He shed April 1sh and June 1st and I had no indication he was about to shed last week...other than that he only ate one of his mice (he's up to 2 weanlings) the weekend before this one we are just returning from. I didn't see him in blue or with a pink belly or any of that. I've worked really hard at not taking him out too much and being too selfish with him because he's usually in a ball and appears kinda miserable when I do... unless I make with the mouse then he likes being out hehehe. Anyway I got plenty of excuses, but basically I didn't see he needed extra humidity (gauge read at about 55% during that time) and now his eyes are dented. Will they just go back to normal if I do better next shed? Does it hurt? :( He ate both of his mice this weekend... so that was good. Is there anything I can do for him?

Did the eyecaps come off when he shed?

If not then bump the humidity during the next shed and they may come off.

If it is retained eye caps it won't hurt him. It just makes it harder for him to see.

Are you keeping a log of when he eats, sheds and so forth?

yes I'm keeping a log of when he he eats and sheds, it's very routine so far. The eye caps as well as everything else came off in one piece... well the head separated from the body eventually, but you know what I mean...I had thought that I'd gotten away with it when i was cleaning and saw he'd shed, but all in one piece, but then I took him out (he was in a different hide when I cleaned his tank up a bit the other night, I didn't bother him to do it) and saw he had little dents in his eyes. :( Like I said he ate both his mice this weekend though.

Just curious, what do these dents look like? I've never heard of dented eyes till now from all my research. I assume they get them from retained skin around the eyes but what do they look like?\

Edit: Just found this on kingnsake.com python care

"Q: Help, My snakes eye has a dent in it!
A: Don't panic. This occasionally happens and can be attributed to the snake being a little dehydrated. Make sure it's got fresh water and a bowl that it can soak in. The dent should be gone with the next shed cycle. "

It's kinda hard to describe and my phone wouldn't get a great shot of it, but it just looks like the eye balls are caved in in a spot in the middle... the eye caps came off, that's one of the things I check for when I have a shed... like I said, I thought we'd gotten away with it till I saw his eyes at feeding time the other day. I'm sorry I can't be more descriptive... hopefully someone else will be able to help me describe it to you.

Is this gonna go away next shed or can I be helping him sooner somehow?

It means that they are dehydrated and need more water.

This happened once to one of the eyes on my BP. It happened during the middle of the shed when the moss in his hide got too dry (oops). I wetted the moss and the dent came out by itself before he even shed.

Great!! I sprayed all the moss down and got the humidity up to 62% and will keep it elevated in hopes he can pop those suckers back out before his next shed!
