    A little question?
Im going to clean out my bp's cage and..i was thinking
since i dont have any of that reptile carpet stuff
can i just use newspaper at the bottom so he wont
burn himself from the under tank heat pad
when he burrows under the aspen???

Newspaper is fine and as a matter of fact I would recommend it over the reptile carpet. However, the temps should never be warm enough to burn him even if he comes in contact with the glass bottom. I'm assuming that the UTH is under the tank and not in the tank, right?

I dont mean it would burn him...i meant...should i use somthing
under the aspen...because i read somthing that said u should
use somthing on top of it incase he borrows. My heating pad
is under the tank glass and is not very hot.

As long as the UTH is controlled by a quality thermostat or even a rheostat set at an appropriate temperature, you shouldn't have to worry about your snake being burned if it burrows. The only exception would be if you have a really thick layer of aspen and you're measuring the temps on top. In that case the aspen may insulate enough so that the glass temps are quite a bit warmer than the surface temps of the aspen.

That's easy enough to prevent, though... just put down a thin layer of aspen. An inch or two is sufficient.

?????????????? I have absolutely no idea what this means.

newspaper is a substrate... I use it for most of my snakes, if they really need they go underneath it. IMO it's much better than reptile carpet.

Yes newspaper is a substrate, He wants to know what should he put in the bottom of the substrate he wants to use, so I made it clear that newspaper is sutable to use as a coverup for whatever substrate he wants to use on top. Does that sound a little better sorry if you didnt get it.

No, because there's no need to cover anything up besides the bottom of the cage, so that just makes no sense. Why would you put substrate, and then put more different substrate?

If you are woried about him burrowing under the paper just cut out a nice little stack of news paper and tape it over the area that the UTH is under, then lay more newspaper over that. its a littel more work but do the job nicely. Just be sure to change the taped down paper with each cage cleaning.
