Genetic Jumble
In probably a couple months from now I'll be having me a 1.2 Trio of DH Sunglow (Albino/Ghost) ball pythons. And They won't be able to breed till a year or 2 from now but If I get the understanding of this now I'll remember it forever. But when those double hets are bred together I should get Albinos, Ghosts, Sunglows, Hets, Double hets and normals. I'm just wondering how would you label the 'normal' appearing snakes, would you just call them all 50% DH sunglows since they would all have the possibility of being either an albino het, a ghost het or both??
And...I was also thinking of breeding a pastel Het ghost to one of those females. Since the female would be 100% Ghost and 100% albino, and the Pastel would be Het ghost as well , Then all the 'normal' babies would be 66% het ghost and 50%het albino? And the pastels would be possible Triple hets, Pastel-66% ghost 50% het albino?
Somebody PLease Correct Me if I'm wrong or If I explained it wrong or something.

Re: Genetic Jumble
The normal looking offspring of the recessive double het pair would have a separate 2/3 chance of being het for each parent type. The cumulative chance of being het for both would be 4/9, so pretty close to 50% but not quite. I think such babies are under rated because they also only have a 1/9 chance of being completely normal. I picked up a male 4/9 chance double het for VPI snow pretty cheep years ago and the females weren’t all that much more. Lots of people don't like possible hets and miss out on stuff like that.

Re: Genetic Jumble
Heres the percent out come
6.25% Normal
12.5% Het. Hypo
6.25% Hypo
12.5% Het. Albino
25% DH Albino Hypo
12.5% Hypo het Albino
6.25% Albino
12.5% Albino het Hypo
6.25% Sunglow
So you basically have a 1:16 chance of getting a Sunglow.
Labeling the normals DH Sunglow would be incorrect and basically wrong to your customers. Cause they are not all poss DH you would be better to say poss het albino/hypo/sunglow.

Re: Genetic Jumble
do you have a picture of that snake...curious to see what a sunglow is and what a hypo albino looks like.

Re: Genetic Jumble
There is a pic in the complete ball python guide, but thats the only one i think ive seen. Its actually a fairly subtle morph. It is an orange albino with a varying amount of blushing throughout. pretty much a real clean looking albino.

Re: Genetic Jumble
If you look on page 147 of Kevin McCurleys "The Complete Ball Python" there is a pic of one. I think its an odd looking albino but IMO I personally would put much effort in to the morph. But thats just me.

Re: Genetic Jumble
I'll have to look in one of thos books and see the pics. Even if it may be a subtle morph and not as exciting as most, Out of those clutches I could get regular albinos and Ghosts, and thats nothing I'm gonna complain about really, especially when that time comes around it might still be my first clutch, I wouldnt mind hatching albinos and ghosts on my first clutch.
Besides If I did get lucky enough to make a sunglow that be my start at throwing out some triple and quad hets .....now I'm getting ahead of myself.
