might be getting a new girl

hi every one i'm talking with this local guy that whats to get rid of his snake and you should hear this guy i will post a few of the things he is telling me to show you the kind of stupid people out there

i know i scientist who believes reptiles never stop growing, he said
one day
they would find huge snakes, not being hunted, now they find 40-50 ft
snakes
in the wild, wow
it is true, reptiles will grow to the size of their environment,
gaters in a small tank wont get very big, so they up the tanks
not usual but they have had 13 ft balls, usual these days is 4ft or so

I was told that the whole "grow-to-fit" concept didn't actually apply to balls, or most snakes for that matter. Also, I think properly kept captive animals tend to become larger and live longer than wild.

the grow-to-fit concept is a lie that some pet stores use to get you to buy things that will out grow your wants. look at it this way it would be like me buying my son a size 5 shoe and keeping him in that same pair of shoes forever all that will happen is i will mess up his feet and more then likely go to jair for child abuse. there is no animal out there that will grow ti fit there encloser. and Jo i'm working on getting her just have to get this guy to beleive that i will give her a good home as he says he wants to make sure she has a good home and that the person that she goes to know what they are doing with her and know her needs. but it's hard when this guy knows nothing about them as it seems. and he claims that she is a 20 year old girl. so i'm interested in seeing this girl and how big she is.

Sorry, this applies to fish, too. They will grow to their proper size no matter the size of their tank, as long as they are properly cared for. There are instances of certain fish secreting a chemical to keep others of their species from growing as fast (discus and angelfish are two examples) so that the biggest one get to stay big and the smaller ones die out from not getting enough food.

I have to disagree. I have iridescent sharks, which are actually sutchi catfish, in my aquarium. They only grow to a maximum of a foot in captivity, unless given a huge amount of space, such as in the wild, where they can grow up to five feet.

Thought this applied to turtles as well... ?

true fish grow to the size of their tank, my buddy put a baby oscar in a 20 gallon, he's had it for 5 years and it's less than half the size it should be, still got the same attitude though

Big fish= Big nitrates....


Big Nitrates= Stunted grow/shortened lifespan.

A fish will get just as big...if not bigger than they would in the wild...regardless of tank size...but...only if they are kept in good water quality and have a high quality food.

If the fish grows too large for the tank, it is just producing more waste...and normally the keeper doesn't increase the frequency or amounts of water that is changed out...i.e.. nitrates.

Nitrates will kill fish, and will "stunt" growth. A fish that is supposed to live 15 years may only live 5...while that is still a good amount of time for a fish, its no where near the expected lifespan.

Just my experience and two cents.

Damn, Oscars always seem to grow large so I'm not sure how that guy is keeping it in a 20 gallon tank... My Oscar is in a 90 gallon.

My fish are happy and healthy and I maintain them with weekly water changes and high quality food. However I don't plan on getting an aquarium big enough to let my catfish expand to their 5 foot potential. :D
