I have a question for people who attend/vendor at shows

I was just thinking. There are a lot of shows/expos, there are a lot of Buyers/Sellers and a lot of reptiles. I know there are some very reputable people in this industry who wouldn't sell a sick animal or even ponder taking one to a show. Then there are vendors who bring in animals who are carrying diseases whether they know or not such as IBD. My question is how do you as vendors protect your animals from transmission? I mean its got to be possible to transmit some stuff, you have a lot of people, around the animals, buyers handling animals, not washing their hands, then handling someone elses animals, possible spreading something around.

Do you not let people handle the animals? Or are their certain precautions you take to prevent things like IBD being tossed around at shows?

Just curious, I haven't been to show (will go in OCT. :D ) so I don't know how they work. I would be concerned with my animals health.

I can't speak to this fully Kristy other than to tell you my experience at a small show (Taylor, MI) was that the good, reputable breeders there all had sanitizing gel in plain sight and you were expected to make full use of it. Personally I'd always take some along in my purse anyways as I don't want to ever be the transmission route for any problems either at shows or coming home to my own collection.

Most breeders (at least those who care) keep a bottle of alcohol based hand sanitizer on their table. NOBODY touches an animal without using the sanitizer first! At the expo I attended this past weekend, I even saw breeders use sanitizer between handling their own animals.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't sure if they let people handle the animals or not because of that. I will be sure to bring some hand sanitizer when I go. I wouldn't want to worry about infecting anyones animals. Or bring anything home to my own.

Well whether they let you handle or not Kristy is up to each breeder I suppose. Definitely take along your own hand sanitizing gel and personally when we go to shows we come home and change and shower just to be careful. I know at the Taylor show I was able to hold my first pinstripe and I nearly started to cry I was so touched the breeder would put that equisite snake in my hands.

As an added precaution, you can take a can of spray disinfectant like Lysol, or a bleach solution to disinfect your shoes, and such(Obviously don't spray regular bleach on your clothing or shoes) before you get into your car.
Most venders I see use the hand sanitizer, and make sure that potential buyers do as well.
