Are ball pythons this lazy?
Ok i was feeding my new python today and i was wiggling the mouse around.
It got all tensed and shakeing so i layed the mouse down in the cage ( Its
frozen thawed by the way ) anywho he curls up in a ball like he didn't want it.
I put it next to his head and he just slowly and without a care in the world
slowly bit down on the mouse and ate it. Is this normal?
It was pretty funny i wished i had the camra when i saw this. Thanks!
Re: Are ball pythons this lazy?
I know that mine really responds to the movement of the 'zombie mouse dance' and will usually not strike or even advance toward it unless it is being jiggled around by my tongs.
I don't know much about snake eyesight, but I know that cats see movement much better than stationary objects. I suspect that predators like cats and snakes are designed to home in on moving prey with the greatest of ease.
however, if you bump him on the nose with the mouse he will always strike it, probably just a defensive strike but once he gets a mouthful of mouse he decides to keep it :)
Re: Are ball pythons this lazy?
Next week when you feed him/her try wiggling the mouse WITH TONGS after hes bitten it, this way the snake will think the mouse is alive and trying to get away which should get him to wrap the mouse up and give it a hug.
Re: Are ball pythons this lazy?
I was useing tongs. Ok i will jiggle it around next feeding. His feeding records are great but this is his first feeding with me. I wasn't really sure because i haven't fed a snake in a long while. So thanks guys!
Re: Are ball pythons this lazy?
I know its not exciting but as long as hes eating it doesnt really matter how he does it.
Re: Are ball pythons this lazy?
I've heard of snakes that were so used to f/t that they just swallowed their food without constricting. No big deal either way. Of course, none of mine have ever fed like that. It's either slip prey in quietly and leave it overnight (f/t only of course), or pray my snake doesn't launch itself out of it's tub trying to get to the food.
Re: Are ball pythons this lazy?
Mine has done that a few times, but not lately. He wasn't interested in eating, but it seems he ate out of courtesy to me. He would slowly grab it and slowly bring it in. I would hold the mouses tail with the tongs until he got it firmly in his mouth and slowly lower the mouse.
It is weird!!
Re: Are ball pythons this lazy?
My Blood did something just like that but to a live Rat. He was real casual about the whole thing, the Rat never moved, it's like he accepted his fate.

My big boy maximus will eat a f/t if i just throw it in there. He doesnt care either way. Sometimes just for old times sake i will do the zombie dance. But he's the only one that seems to not care.
