Aquarium glass question

Hello, I am in the process of building a new melamine enclosure which is 4' long. I am putting sliding glass doors on the front. I was recently at a auction and they had 4 aquariums for sale, I won the bid on all 4 for only $5.00. I thought maybe I could take them apart and use the glass for the front of my new tank. Does anyone know how to take a tank apart ?? If I can make it work I will still have enough glass for several other tanks. Thanks

usually they are only held together by the plactic pieces on the top and bottems, and by the sealant. a nice pair of pliars and maybe a paint scraper and your set.

You could also use a glass cutting tool and cut off the excess and the parts with the sealant. That stuff can be a pain to remove. My favorite tool for removing the glass on tanks is always a dremill(sp?) tool along with pliars(sp?) and a flathead screw driver.

I'm sure heating up the sealent with a heat gun will ease your silicone problems. Good deal btw on the tanks :rockon:

try cheese wire ( cheese cutter ) on the silicone

Fishing line works best for that ;) Remove the trim on the top, put the line in the seam and work it back and forth until you get to the bottom. Make sure you have someone there with you to catch the panes as they fall.

Scrape off the excess silicone with a razor. If you want to be really anal about it, you can use an acetate to remove any silicone that might be left.
