need help...

I'M cleaning out jade's tank and treating it for mites, she has em pretty bad, and she has what looks like a tic on her, and its good size too. I tried covering it in vasilene (sp?) to smother it and make it let go, but didn't work, I know you can use lighter but its in a really bad spot to do that. so, how do you remove a tic from a snake?....really have no idea how it even got in there... :( :(

update: Got it off, but what should I put on her spot where the tic was? anything?

You shouldn't have to put anything on it. If you can see a wound or if it's swollen you can smear a little neosporin on it. Also, ticks are normally found on WC or CH snakes. I'd suggest getting a checkup done at a reptile vet and bring in a fecal sample to see if your snake has any parasites.

You shouldn't need to put anything on it...just keep an eye on the spot to make sure no infection starts. Also, if you found one chances are there are more...so I would look really carefully. They can hind under scales and can appear reddish and brown. I have looked over WC and thought I got them all only to wait till feeding day and they wouldn't eat and in looking at them again would find one I missed...so look carefully.:)

Well, her cage was just treated with PAM, so good luck to them if there are still on her.. :D

EDIT: Found a second, what can happen if the head doesn't come with the tic?

It can be a source of infection. It might be worth checking the web to see if there are any tips on how to remove them completely - or hopefully someone on here who knows will chime in.

I've always had luck burning them off. But that was on horses and well, they're quite a bit bigger ;)

Provent A Mite will get rid of them very easily, I'd suggest buying a can just in case.

I always have used tweezers to remove them...just grab up near the head when you pull them out.

cage was sprayed down with it this afternoon and she was just put back in a little bit ago, if there were any I missed hopefully this will get em, shes had a really bad problem with mites too, so hopefully in one clean up day I got it all taken care of.
