    clay pot substrate
while i was working at petco, i ran into this substrate that i've never heard of before.it's basically the same stuff used to make clay pots but grounded up so it's packed finely.looks like sand but it's clay.is this good for snakes or herps in general? the bag says it's good for burrowing purposes and can be used for burrowing reptiles or just as regular substrate.

I thought sand was a bad idea period... so I would think a sand-like substance wouldn't be any different. My guess...

i was thinking the same thing, but since this is actually clay, i was wondering if it could still have the same effects.

I worked at a clay plant briefly. I wouldn't want that stuff anywhere near my snakes.

    Hi,

Never used it but wouldn't it have the same isues as, say, gravel?

The liquid part of the urates would just end up pooling under it and be very hard to clean up.

Or would it be absorbed by the clay? Gut feeling says it doesn't sound all that good an idea for the reasons the others have mentioned.

I would also be more worried about impaction than with a bio-degradeable substrate if he accidently swallowed it.
