Sunny day Burm pic's

This is Zeus who I rescued last August, he was about 8ft and 15lbs at 6yrs old. Now he is 9.5ft and 35-40 lbs or so (just guessing on the weight). He had some medical problems that were taken care of immediately when I got him. He has since continued to gain weight and get longer although I don’t expect he will ever reach full male Burm size due to his age and poor treatment in the beginning of his life. I am now going to back off on the feeding and lengthen the feeding times to maintain his weight. I took him outside today and let him roam around the yard and enjoy the sun, here are some pic’s. The first pic is from last August when he was in poor shape and the others are from today, quite a change.

He's beautiful!!! I don't believe snakes experience emotions as us humans understand them....but I swear that looks like one happy snake!! :D

Burms always have sweet looking faces to me. :aww: In pics 4 and 5 he looks like he's just smiling! :D

Funny thing happened with him, I took him into the yard a few weeks ago and he coiled and stayed there (looking lost and confused) wouldn't move at all. After a few minutes he noticed where I was standing and went directly to me, straight up my leg and around my shoulders and stayed there (almost like "Dad I'm scared what is this stuff"). It didn't dawn on me until he did it that he may not have been in the grass before or allowed to roam outside. Now I know they don't have the emotions we do so did he climb me because of recognition or smell? Or because I was the closest thing to climb? (There were three other people within reach). I never drop my guard (especially with giants) and always remember they have only basic brain function and only tolerate us but sometimes I wonder.

My rather uneducated opinion on the matter is that the snake would understand you to be a safe place to go since ever since knowing you, he's damn doubled in size and gotten back to a healthy boy... I'd think that he'd associate you with all things good and that to me would be why he went to you. He may not "love" you or whatever (of course how do we know that 100%?) but rather identify you as a safe warm place. Better than any hide, man sometimes you toss food his way :D I dunno know... Congrats on a job well done with this rescue! It's just such a stark contrast!

I got to meet my first little baby burm in a petstore (I have no interest in owning something like this, but that doesn't mean I'm not fascinated) The guy told me the snake might bite, but since he was a slender 2.5-3 feet long (poor guy in a 10 ga with a half log hide :colbert: ) and I'm still a snake bite virgin, so I told him I'd take the risk. Old boy didn't seem as calm in my hands as in the pet store employees hands (he's a snake guy and has been working with the burm to get it used to handling, but it still hisses and strikes a lot) he kept going up my arms or for my face. I don't know why, but I really came to understand the power that tiny little guy held although he was not that much bigger than my ball python (longer, but not much girthier yet) I had underestimated him. I don't know why he kept going for my face, but I didn't want to get my first snake bite in the face so I passed him back to the guy... :oops: a failure LOL... it really freaks me out that this burm is only $130 at petco... OMG... that just makes it waaaaaaaay too easy (IMO) to get one of these giants and make a BIG mistake not knowing what you're getting into... again, that's just my opinion... it'd be like selling an African Grey parrot for $100 IMO...
