Introduction

Hey guys,

I have been lurking around these forums for about six weeks now and have had my ball python for about four weeks. Just wanted to say that I appreciate everyone's knowledge as reading your posts has really helped me get my tanks temps and humidity stablized. My temps are 83/94 with 50% humidity. Humidity has been a problem, but I was able to get it up from 35% to 50% recently by placing a damp sponge on top of one of the hides along with the water bowl. Does anybody see a problem with doing this? Other than that, thanks for your knowledge and look forward to talking with you all.

I don't see any problem with using a sponge. If it works and makes your humidity in the right range I'd keep it. Also spraying the sides of the tank down daily will also help a bit too.

My only concern with the wet sponge would be growth of mold - keep a sharp eye on it! And welcome to the forum!

I kind of thought that I would get a reply about the potential for mold. What do you think that I should use to clean the sponge periodically?

With the cost of sponges being quite low, I would make a suggestion that you just replace it every week or two.

If you don't want to do that, I'd get a container and have an extra soaking in either a dilute betadine mixture or Novalsan/Chlorhexadine solution. That way you can have one in the tank and one soaking. When it's time to change, rinse the one that's been soaking THOROUGHLY in running water. Once it runs clear, swap out the two.

Have you tried just covering the screen top with aluminum foil/duct tape to prevent the heat and humidity from escaping?
