making a cage

So im looking into buying my own ball python i have done my research about housing feeding, what they need and what not, but it would be alot easier for me if i could just build my own cage for the snake, and my main question is, is it ok to build the cage out of wood, and is there any special wood or anything special i should do with the cage?

Many people have constructed cages out of wood, but I would recommend sealing it with polyurethane or other similar waterproof coating. The problem with untreated wood is that it will absorb urine, feces and other bodily fluids that can harbor bacteria.

Another option that many people use is Melamine. It's pretty durable and easy to clean, but it's quite a bit heavier than regular plywood.

i was also thinkign about maybe layering the plywood with maybe macinate, i was worried about putting paint or anything else on the wood for the snakes respirtory.

I have a snake cage built out of wood. I used a water based polyureathane and so far have not seen any signs of stress(have my first gravid female in the cage). I also used vinyl flooring on the bottom of the cage for an added layer of waterproofing.
