Substrate? Other options

I switched to "Stall bedding" from Tractor supply for the rats and tehy have been sneezing a lot more so I am going to go to something else. I was thinking of going back to aspen but wanted to know what other cost efficient options there are. Aslo, would lining the tubs with kity litter be ok to do. Not having any problems with smell thanks to the 2 newest products I am now using.

I've found that wood pellets do wonders on keeping smell, dust, expenses down. I some times mix in this kind of bedding with the wood pellets: http://www.mytscstore.com/detail.asp...&productID=627

I wish I had a cheap source of wood pellets around here.

Don't use kitty litter, unless its a pelleted paper like "Yesterdays News". That's actually one of the best rat substrates out there for odor control and lack of dust.

Any pelleted bedding is good. I'm currently using "Woody Pet" which is processed wood pellets. It's fairly cheap, about $5.50 for 35 lbs or so.

I've also used alfalfa pellets, $9 for 50 lbs, but they have their own rather strong hay smell.

The wood pellets may work ok. That 2nd link is the stuff I use. Bad sneezing and red noses. Would getting all the extra dust out of it make a difference?

Decided to go back to aspen for now. I'll post a follow up on the products I use to keep smell down later
