    Jack's Peak, Monterey
It was supposed to rain today, but fortunately the weather turned out pretty nice. My youngest son and I decided to take a hike up to Jack's Peak that overlooks Monterey Bay. Here are a few pics from our hike...

Overlooking the bay near the peak.

    Some nice wildflowers in bloom.

A nice Monterey Ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctatus vandenburgii)
He was right on the trail and took off as soon as we saw him. We followed him hoping that he would calm down, but as soon as he started to hide in an old stump I grabbed him. After he musked all over me, I managed to get him out and took a few pics when he calmed down.

    Lawrence,
Love that ring neck. In the first pic, I thought it was a grey banded. They look so different from their Southern siblings. Ours are black, and those appear to be olive colored. Very beautiful.

They are the prettiest snakes in this area. :) We don't have too many snakes around here, so the little gems like this one are a pretty nice find. I bet you have plenty of nice snakes in your neck of the woods, though. :snake:

You know Lawrence all the cool PS2 games in the world don't touch this sort of experience for a kid. How wonderful you are spending this kind of time with your child and helping him learn to enjoy nature and time with dad....good for you!

Thanks everyone! It was a nice little hike, and surprisingly there weren't a lot of people on the trails for such a nice weekend day. I was pretty glad to find the Ring-neck because I hardly found any snakes last year. Hopefully this year will be better, and I plan on setting up a few snake habitats around our property to attract some gopher and king snakes.

It's nice to see someone from my area, I moved to the area about a year ago, and have to say jacks peak is defiantly beautiful. I don't know if you have the same problem, but I seem to have a problem finding a good source of mice, thats within a reasonable distance. anyway its late amd I have to be up early tomorrow. good night.
