How to Read Acurite Thermonitor
HeY people i have an acurite thermonitor and i was just wonders which temp do i read the indoor or the outdoor temp?
and also i just recently bought my ball Python and i was wondering if i should put his cage in a closet that's in my room being in fact that summer is almost here and i have A/C in my room?

BOTH.
Put the probe on the cool side and put the little console in the tank or tub on the hot side. you get and cool and hot temp and even the humidity.

Aww shucks... I did that wrong too... :P I put the reader on the cold side and the probe on the warm side... I'll fix it when I get home *sigh*

That will work too. Just as long as both the reader and the probe are in the enclosure.

what?
why would you do that? I put the probe on the warm side so it reads the actual belly heat..not ambient temps...
I could be wrong...but if your ambient warm temps are reading ~93, would that mean your belly heat is much higher? :confuzd:

:D I'd already made the mistake of not putting the reader in the tank... I was like NO WAY the humidity is still 53%! It should be like 80% right now the way I just misted (he was just about to shed and with the lamp it doesn't stay 80%, it just starts out high when I mist and then it drops fast) and then I realized the original purpose of the accurite and felt that this mistake was rather dumb LOL... :oops:

Right.... but if you set the controller down on the substrate your getting pretty much the same thing as you would with the probe(like in the picture). Either will work just fine. As long as the controller is on the substrate and the probe is on the substrate. I mean if the probe is on the hot side and the controller is up off the ground on the cool side the your not getting an accurate cool side temp.

Not dumb! Your learning.
Lights tend to suck humidity out of the air. Try and use only a UTH with a dimmer or preferably a thermostat of some kind. You'll see the humidity get stable and be loads easier to maintain and keeping the humidity up during sheds will be a misting every two to three days thing.

This was my logic too. Otherwise, how will you know if the hot side ground temp is too hot? the cool side ground doesn't matter as much, just as long as the ambient isn't below 80-83 range. The hot side belly temp must be between 90-93, if it is too low, it isn't hot enough to digest properly, if it is too high you can cause harm to the animal.
I would definately put the probe on the hot side, under the hide where the snake spends most of its time, and the unit on the cool side. If ambient temp on the hot side was 93 I would assume that, yes, the ground temp would be much hotter, probably out of the ideal 90-93 range.

Edit: You're too quick for me! I stand my unit up so I can read it from the outside of the tub. If you stand it up, I recommend doing it this way. If you lay it down, then either way would work I guess.

Now that it's warming up a lot, I've stopped using the heat lamp. My basking spot has been staying at 92-94 without the lamp on. I think I'll only have to use the lamp occasionally either to decrease humidity in the tank or if the room temps drop (which in NC they do a lot... today 80 degrees, Thursday 50...)
