Beardy has the runs

:eek: I came home yesterday, went to check on the repitles and OH MY GOD :O My sons Bearding had the runs. We feed him mainly small cricket and beardy food. He resently started feeding him some - Yellow Zucchini, fresh beans, and romane lettuce. All this is sprinckled with D3. Can this cause the runs? Or should I be looking for other causes?

I don't know a whole lot about beardies, so take this with a grain of salt:

I do know that if you feed a lot of lettuce to say, a gerbil, that they get what is called "wet tail" which is essentially the runs... maybe he has the runs because of the new veggies in his diet?

What do you mean by 'runs'? Is it ALL liquid? Some solids? Watery solids?

It could be the new diet of veggies or it could be some sort of intestinal parasite.

Does the animal appear dehydrated? Slightly pinch(not hard) its skin into a wrinkle along its back, if the skin goes back to its orginal position it should be hydrated. If the wrinkle of skin just remains the same way, I would suggest giving a good soaking for hydration.

If you are concerned, I would call around to a few vets and see if they can do a fecal exam for you. The next time it goes 'poop'......scoop it up with a spoon into a ziplock bag and have the vet check it out ;)

Some solids. We do give him a bath 2 or 3 times week, so I don't think he's dehydrated. His skin looks good also. I hoping it's the veggies. We stopped giving him veggies and we'll see if it changes. I hope so, cause DAMN it stinks :eek: :(

You mention that it stinks. Is it worse with the runs or about the same as usual?

My beardies always had semi-runny feces.....they were fed crickets, mealies, and a variety of greens everyday.

It sounds fine to me, but like I said before a fecal done by a vet would not be a bad thing though....probably would only cost you $10-$15 too....so not too costly.

I think I will do that. For the best, just in case.

Hi.. I noticed that you are feeding Romaine lettuce. Romaine has essentially NO nutritional value for beardies. You should been feeding greens like turnip, mustard and collard greens.
