Borrowing Males???

Is this a common practice in the BP community? I've heard of dog and horse owners doing it and paying a stud fee or a portion of the litter (dogs) ...just wondering if ya'll do it?

Seems like an affordable way for a novice breeder to get started...

Its call a breeder loan. And yea people do it. You have to know a breeder and they have to trust you. Its a big deal but yea its done

I, personally, would run far away from a self-admitted 'novice' trying to borrow a valuable morph male from me.

Given that, I would say that it is not a common way for beginners to get into the hobby.

I would recommend raising your own stock. Experience is a valuable lesson that can never be taught.

This hobby requires patience. Think marathon, not sprint.

The way it's generally done is you send a healthy adult female ball python of proper weight to the breeder to cycle/breed. He returns the female to you along with the agreed upon split.

I have a few breeding loans going right now, but I did it a little different. I am giving all of the babies produced to the owner of the adult female which they sent me, and in return I keep the breeding size female after she lays. There are many other clauses to cover health issues, genetic issues, failed breeding, etc., but that was the basic deal of the loans I did.

In the case of a deal between a novice and an experienced breeder, the ball is normally sent to the experienced breeder. In the case of two experienced breeders, normally the ball is shipped to the breeder with the more expensive snake.

I was wonering if breeding loans were done with ball pythons as well, i have done it with crested geckos and had a bad experiance. i was foolish enought to send my female and it just died three weeks after the person i sent it too got it. and i did see pics of her so i knew she was dead. so my new rule is only send males. and personaly i would only send one of my male morphs to an experianced breeder, i dont think i know enought about the breeding ball pythons even if somebody let me have there female.

here is a pic of the female crested i lost :( he gave me some other sweet geckos to replace her though, one is cosmo that now belongs to Ed Clark

Just so you guys know, this was not a request to "borrow" anyones snake. It was just a question. Obviously, I would not ask a stranger to borrow a multi-thousand dollar morph. The question was mainly posed to breeders who ask other breeders that they know for a "loan". I'm not talking about some back-alley, craigslist type of arangement.

Breeding loans happen with ball pythons. There is always a chance of a bad experiance. You must deal with someone you can trust and you should try to foresee anything that may happen, even if it's not likely, and try to resolve the 'what if's' before you even enter into an agreement so that all partys know what to expect.

Rushing into a breeding loan with someone you know and trust, without working out the 'what if's' can end in ruining trust and a good friendship so use caution.

well this person was a good breeder and we cant figure out why she died. and i dont blame him because he takes really good care of his animals

Tony, breeding loans are a great and inexpensive way to add morphs to your collection if you're short on the upload of cash for a morph. I have one currently in standing with another forum member.But, you should always do it the smart way - with a contract agreed upon by both participants. I'm sure everyone's breeding loan is a bit different, but the principle is the same- to protect both individuals. You also want to enter a BL with someone who has experience as well as someone you have trust in.You don't want to rest your possibly valuable part of the clutch(es) with someone who has never hatched eggs before. At the same token, would you feel right accepting the care and breeding of another person's valuable snake (normal or otherwise) to your snake if you have no experience breeding? I don't know,Tony if you have any experience breeding BPs. If not, I would highly reccommend acuiring breeding size normals, just to get some experience breeding and raising babies. You could also hook up with a trusted friend who also has BPs, and has the same intention as you. Maybe he's got a nice sized female and no male, or vice versa with you. Once you get some experience "in your belt", you will have a bit more success in acquiring a breeding loan with someone.
