Rookie Mistake
Hey Guys!!!
I'm new to the site and BPs...I bought one last week (Daisy) and just figured I'd share my funny little story with you guys.
The day I got the snake, my temps and humidity in my 20L aquarium were great. I am using dual Acu-Rite Thermo/Hygros located on top of the tank with the probes running into their respective sides of the tank. Aluminum foil over the top, wide water bowl, and damp moss were all present prior to the snake's arrival. I was using aspen bedding.
The day after Daisy's arrival. The humidity dropped to the 20s and 30s...YIKES. Even with misting...still low.
Did my research on this forum and others like it and found cypress mulch would be better. So, I changed to cypress mulch and added a second container of damp beaked moss. Should be perfect, right?
Nope. After four days, my Acu-Rite Thermo/Hygro was now reading "LO" (<20%)!!! How can this be possible? I did everything perfect.
Spent the next few days trying to figure out what the hell was wrong. I stumbled upon an old post here that outlined my problem...the probes on Acu-Rites only measure temps. The units themselves measure humidity. My units were outside my tank :D
Got home from work...put units in the tank. Shot up to 90%. Now I gotta lower the humidity, LOL.
Hope you guys laugh as much as I did.
Tony

Re: Rookie Mistake
 That sounds like something I would do! Glad you got it figured out. And good for you on having everything set up before bringing your snake home, so that the biggest problem you've encountered is a little humidity confusion. :D

Re: Rookie Mistake
Wait till the day everything goes wonky and you race to figure out why your warm side temps just went for a dump...well they didn't...your snake just went for a dump...right on top of the probe tucked inside her hide! :) (btw best way I've found to get snake poop off an Acu-Rite probe without damaging it is to wipe it with a baby wipe)
