Personally, turtles are kind of boring, as they don't do a whole lot. Frogs are cool, but if you're wanting something that you can handle quite a bit, frogs aren't what you want. Inform your dad on all you know about them and prove that you're truly responsible and maybe it'll work. :)

<<-- LOVES turtles. I would disagree...at least with aquatic turtles, they are never boring and always moving. I would like to say though don't fall for the quarter sized turtles trick, because most of them end up getting the size of a dinner plate after a few years...if you have a pond though I guess that won't matter. Aquatic turtles that stay fairly small are painted and mud/musk turtles, both of which are common in the U.S. I'm sure if you do a google search you'll find lots of info.
Also this following link has lots of caresheets:

Bearded Dragons are great reptiles that enjoy being handled. Most people will warm up to a lizard before a snake. I think if you took your dad to a reptile show it would open his eyes a little more. Let him see the difference between a ball python and a retic. Lots of people don't know the difference in snakes and think you're gonna bring home some huge snake that will terrorize the neighborhood. Education is the key. Best of luck.
