Urgent!

My female mouse gave birth but I found them all over the cage moving and struggling. What happened? What can I do? Arent they supposed to be in a pile?
She is a first timmer.

Mice are notorious for abandoning or eating their young, especially first time mothers. You may try to give the young to another experienced mother if one is available, but other than that there's not much you can do in order to get the mother to care for her young.

You can also try providing more nesting material such as shredded newspaper, and keep her in an unstressful, quiet area... then just hope for the best.

This is actually why I stopped breeding mice, but others have had great luck breeding them.

I would also recommend you pile all the babies back up together. They will help keep each other warm and hopefully mom will come around.

If you do pile them up though, use a scoop or handle with gloves. Mice usually don't seem to mind human scent on their babies but since she is a new mother, she might smell you on them and eat the young.

I know many a hamster that did this at the pet shop I used to work at.

Oh great to hear Sam. I'm more used to dealing with rats and they rarely care if you handle their young but I've heard mice are a bit more antsy. Hopefully I'll have our first mice litters soon so I get more hands on experience and knowledge with mice and see how they are the same/different than breeding rats.
