New Tortoise?

I was looking at pick up a new baby tortoise from an up-coming reptile show. I'd like one that stays as small as possible. So far my top 2 choices that came up was either a Russian Tortoise or a Hermann's Tortoise. Does anyone have any ideas about what prices would be, roughly, from an expo? I've never been to one before. Or does anyone else know any other decent-priced breeds that stay under 10" full grown?

Mlededee, just got her husband a Herman's tort and she's been raving about the little guy. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the torts otherwise. :oops:

You may also want to consider looking at the vendor list for the upcoming show. Look at the websites and contact anyone you might consider purchasing from. You can also check their reputation on the BOI at fauna.

i don't know that i've ever seen herman's tortoises for sale at an expo although i never really looked specifically for one at a show. i'd guess show prices for one to be in the $100-120 range.

keep in mind that even though they do stay relatively small they are active and still need a good deal of space to graze and exercise in. they should be allowed to live outdoors (in an appropriately secured area) if at all possible and need access to a variety of fresh greens and other vegetation on a daily basis.

Your best bet will be on the internet for a baby one. I have very rarely seen them at show mainly cause of the 4" law.

that's true, although if your state doesn't allow tortoises under 4" as pets you shouldn't have one shipped to you either. just make sure to look into it ahead of time and you'll be fine. :)

Technically no state does as the 4" law is federal, but its rarely enforced outside of herp shows as even pet stores that sell turtles/tortoises always have a sign that say "turtles under 4" are sold for educational purposes only" or somthing very close to that. The law is very dated and really needs to be reviewed and updated

I don't really care if I get an adult one, as long as its CB. I've been looking everywhere to adopt one, but no one has any available. I'd happily pay shipping, but I just can't find any. I wouldn't mind a 5, 10, or even 15+ year old tortoise. I only want someone healthy, with a good personality. Many of my current herps are rescues.

Does anyone know any tortoise rescues?

With an adult you are going to be almost certainly looking at a WC your best bet for an adult would be a LTC.
