Smell?

Alright, please do not getting offended, I just want the honest truth.
Do Ball Python's smell? Does the smell infest the room?

I've been told that snakes, generally, don't smell very good. I've scowered the internet and I can't find anything. Has anyone been told their snake smells bad?

I know they would have their own distinct smell, like any animal but is a bad smell. Just need to know.

I think it kinda depends on how many you have as well as the type of animal. My friend has a ball python in her room (we are both in 12x14 foot dorm rooms) and you wouldn't be able to tell she had one in there by smell. But if you had several all in the same room, it's going to smell like reptiles. But I'm fairly confedent that if you keep the enclosure clean you can keep what smell they do have from being noticed. Just my :2cent: Maybe someone with more experiance could add to (or disprove) me :sunny:

They don't have much body smell compared to mammals
but when they poo or pee, the smell is really bad until you clean it up.

i only have one ball python and he doesn't smell at all. the only smell you get is the smell of your substrate...and of course when they go to the bathroom.

I have 22 balls in a 12 X 12 guest room. I keep the room "warm" so any smells are augemented. I keep them on newspaper (so nothing to really help with the smell) and the only time you can smell them is when they defecate (sp?)...but as soon as I clean it up the smell dissapates very quickly...nothing long term.

I think the key is keeping the enclosure clean. I imagine if you use bark-type stuff as substrate and you only "spot clean" for awhile, then only clean the whole tank out once a month, you're going to have more residual smell than if you kept your BP on newspaper and cleaned up every time it pooped/pee/urate, etc.

So far, my BP doesn't smell at all. He's had a poop, which did smell--but I cleaned the tub out and that went away quickly.

i've smelled some pretty bad stuff when opening up enclosures from time to time..but what animal's poo doesn't stink?

as for the snakes themselves...no not really.

I have a cat, a fish, five mice, a snake, two children, and a husband. The snake is the least smelly of all. :D

Seriously, except the smell of poo and pee, which cleans up right away, snakes are about as unsmelly an animal as there is. They're about as smelly as they are slimy. :D

I have 15 and have no smells. Substrate is changed weekly and urates and poop are spot cleaned

It really depends on your enclosure. I originally had a glass vivarium -- any stink was amplified. But now I have a tub, and I only know that there is any stink when I open up the tub.

You should know, if you leave the snake in a stinky enclosure it will absorb some of the stink. I usually give my snake a bath after he poos. That way he is as clean as his environment.

BTW, My snake poos about once every three weeks.
