good snakes for kids

i have seen some threads and i have young kids asking me what kind of snake for them to get.
here are my top pics
1. Rosy boa
2. Corn snake
3. most milk snakes
4. ball pythons
5. most kingsnakes (except greybanded)
now the ones i have seen avalible to anyone at stores that i dont agree with
1. burmese pythons
2. any retic
3. blood pythons
4. any tree boa or tree python
5. any high temp or high humidity or picky eater snake like solomon island ground boa.
agree? any other coments

My trinket rat is as docile as they can get! IMO, a good alternative to a corn (not that there's anything wrong with corns;) )

EXCELLANT CHOICES for kiddos!!!! When we got our first Rosy Boa it was for my son's 6th birthday.... It is the best snake I have ever had for a child!!! Very docile, very outgoing but not wiry, not boring at all, plus beautiful and a good manageable size... So perfect I bought one for my daughter as well!!! But with supervised visitation from mom of course!!!! :)

How big do the rosy boas get?

Well, this is decided by a few factors...

First, what is the parent/guardian prepared to care for?
What kind of space, time, and funds does the parent/guardian have?
What are you looking for in the snake?


Personally, if you want something gentle, somewhat low maintanance and easy to care for; I'd go with a Ball Python. I've owned and worked with Kingsnakes, and Ball Pythons, and in my opinion the BP is a better choice. I've seen Kingsnakes come off as nippy alot of times and half the time for no reason. This can intimidate a kid, and possibly dissuade him/her from keeping reptiles. Although it really doesn't hurt much, it does kind of spook you from time to time :P
Under your list of what you don't agree with, alot of pet stores go with captive hatched, or wild caught animals which can prove to be picky eaters from time to time. The pet stores buy these animals to save money, due to the latter being normally cheaper than captive bred stock. If you buy quality stock, you'll be much more pleased in the end :)

Kings and milks can be psycho and very nervous/nippy when they're young.

Sand boas (kenyan or roughscaled) are great choices as well.. very similar to rosy boas, but they're a bit smaller. I keep both species.. very cool snakes.

Well since I only have experience with bps, I'd go with a bp. My son is 5 and loves his pet.

On Milksnakes, make sure to exclude Pueblan's, those things are nutty.

well it sounds like it varies on the individual snake, my nelsons milk was calm as a juvie. and on a kenyan, havent they been known to bite a finger that reaches into the cage when they pop out of the sand?

You might want to look into African house snakes as well.
