Re: Which look do you like?
#1!
The other is okay, but I'm not a fan of pictures that have been put in to a negative image.
Re: Which look do you like?
I prefer the green colouring, but hate the way the text completely obscures an otherwise lovely face.
Re: Which look do you like?
The first one is my fav. I like how the red looks but I love that face! Great head pattern and beautiful eyes ;)
Re: Which look do you like?
The black and red contrast seems easier to me. I'm no designer, but working with alot of "dark space" can sometimes be hard to work with or not be as inviting to some folks.

DEF. number 1 - all the way.
Re: Which look do you like?
hmm..is that a splash page? if so you should definitely lose it. splash pages serve no purpose and to me they are very annoying.
i think as far as "web design" goes, less is more. there are far too many reptile sites that scream "OMG LOOK I USED 14 PHOTOSHOP FILTERS ON ONE IMAGE!!". i kind of prefer simple (even minimalist) and clean looking layouts. i'm not trying to disrespect you at all.
from some of the sites that i've seen, there are a couple that too me have a better layout than most. one of which that comes to mind is markus jayne's. there are others, but i think if the purpose of your site is to market or showcase your animals, you should let the animals' beauty "speak" for itself, with a clean and simple design and nice, crisp photos of them and a straightforward method of navigating through them.
just my ¢2.
Re: Which look do you like?
This is probably not gonna help mulch, I like the green coloring better, however I like the original picture compare to the negative effect, so for me it would be a combination of both.
