babies almost bald as they mature?
as you know we have three litters of ratties right now. so honestly... who knows whose pups are whose.

our male is rex. some of our females are rex as well.

so we have two pups who, as they are getting older and scarce with the fur! one is almost bald on the top of it's head and the other is balding all down it's back.

i believe we put down the balding-down-the-back one this week... but the little bald head one is still around.

so... is this overgrooming or is it something genetic?

    what do ya think? :confuzd:

From what little I understand....I'd say it's genetic. As I understand it, "super-rexes" will be baldies to some degree or another.

Yes.. rex is co-dom. Double rexes are sometimes called 'mock hairless'.

I have a bunch of Dbl. Rex in each litter. Almost 1/2 seem to be hairless to some degree or another.

The females will grow a lot of their coat back but the males will be more extreme as far as the hairloss goes. You'll also notice the males have a some what differently shaped head, more of a rounded snout. Larry

hmmm i'm tempted to let this little one grow up just to see what it looks like LOL but my daughter can't stand hairless rats... so it would (in her words) "freak her out"

she's turning 8 in two weeks and that's what she says about everything now... "oh mom, that freaks me out" LOL kids! :8:

    I don't mean to :hijackd:
So just say the word if I should start a new thread...
What if this happens with mouse babies? I have 2 hoppers that are just losing hair, no idea why!
