Finally! Baby Rats have arrived! YEAH!
I'm so excited, I've had my rat Doris for about 6 months now and she is getting huge! I feed her well, hoping she can find the perfect mate.
Well a few months ago I got a boy (who is with us no more) and put him with her for like a month or two.
Eventually I got worried because she didnt have any babies and her belly didnt really seem to change much...
Well after like 2 months or so, I heard a lil squeek sounds coming from the hamster cage, and I looked into the food dish and there were 6 lil babies. WOOOOO

Well I was scared because I have two feeder boys just hanging out in the same cage because I didnt expect her to give birth, so I took them out as fast as I could and prayed she would calm down and keep the little ones.

When I returned from soccer last night. I stuck my head in to see if they were still alive, and to my surprise I counted 14 BABIES! WOOOOOO!
I had to count like 7 times just to get the right number. lol! WAY to many for my math skills.
She build a nest with tissue and I gave her some hamster food and a little dog food, and I dont think she has slept a minute!

I just wanted to share my excitment with you! Hopefully they will all live and become wonderful feeders. :)

By the way I had no where to put thoses other guys so they had to go into the freezer. Poor fellas!

    WISH ME LUCK! :D

    Good Luck!

Those mothers do get very tired.... I've had some pass out with their mammary areas pressed into the corner of the tub where the babies can't get at them. Sometimes they pass out so hard you can poke them and they won't wake up :)

"Rats can be weaned between 3.5 and 5 weeks of age"

Yep wean means the stage when they are ready to be seperated from their mother and her milk supply. Check out Becky's feed mix for other ideas of what to feed her and her litter.
