    Meet Foxy
This girl joined our home before Thanksgiving - the same day I discovered my old camera had bit the dust when I tried to take some pictures to show her off!

Karl named her - and she's my fat girl! I thought she was pregnant once before, but she wasn't. So she's back with Caesar along with Scarlett right now.

The funny thing is, I rarely catch her eating. She's definitely a lap rat - when I got her, she seemed like a very sad rat, and she just pulled at my heartstrings, she just snuggled right into my arms and didn't move. She still seems a little sad - but happier than she was when I first brought her home.

My little black hooded dumbo is the same way. She just seems sad, so I have her out more. She loves falling asleep in my hoodie pouch.

Hey robin, I've noticed when they get that fat look it's usually time to retire them. Do you know how old she is or if she was a previous breeder?

Thanks Larry - I'm not really sure how old she is. I got her from Petsmart, which tends to have young rats. If she doesn't become pregnant, or has a very little litter - she can be the "roomie" for resting females. I was just happy to give her a loving home!

I appreciate your insight - I'll pay close attention to her!

Funny she didn't catch the first time through with the male. I'd give it one more shot, see how it goes and then if she doesn't breed or has a small litter I'd consider that she may be older than you first thought and just retire her. She may also just be infertile as I remember she did have that spotting last month so it's possible she can't carry a litter.

She can still have a vital role in the colony though. My retired adults routinely keep other resting adults company or hang out in the feeder tubs where they run herd on the recently weaned rats (seems to help keep them calm right after weaning and if they get into a scuffle the experienced adult rat generally sorts it out quickly). She's a very lovely beige hooded Robin. Puts me in mind of my favorite, now retired female, HoneyChild.
